What this tool does

Answer 30 personality statements over three pages with 'yes', 'somewhat' or 'no', and the strength of three energies, Wood-Fire, Earth-Metal and Water, is each rated high, medium or low to give one 'destiny type' for that combination. The result page shows the type name, the three energy levels, a destiny reading, relationship fortune, and suitable aptitudes and fields of work. It does not compute a birth chart from your birth date; it is a self-reflection piece that labels personality answers with the names of the five elements, good for conversation at gatherings or comparing results with friends.

How it is calculated

Each page has 10 statements scored yes 2, somewhat 1, no 0, giving 0 to 20 points per energy: page 1 is Wood-Fire, page 2 Earth-Metal, page 3 Water. Each score becomes low (l) at 6 or below, medium (m) from 7 to 13, and high (h) at 14 or above, and the three letters joined in Wood-Fire, Earth-Metal, Water order form the result page address. For example, Wood-Fire 15 (high), Earth-Metal 10 (medium) and Water 5 (low) give code hml, the 'winter moon' type. With three levels for each of three energies, there are 3 × 3 × 3 = 27 results. Earlier page scores travel as numbers in the next page's address, and the last page converts all three into levels and moves to the result. The same answers always give the same type; there is no randomness.

Things to know

• The element names are metaphors: Wood-Fire as the force that reaches out, Earth-Metal as the force that holds and firms, Water as the force that flows and seeps in.
• The intro screen says 36 types, but the scoring can actually produce 27 results.
• Scores on a boundary (6 vs 7, 13 vs 14) flip the type with a single answer. Change an uncertain answer, retake it, and read both descriptions.
• Answering yes to everything gives hhh, and no to everything gives lll. Such results reflect answering style more than personality, so try again honestly.
• Your birth date is never asked, so this differs from 'destiny' in Four Pillars astrology; only the name is borrowed.
• Taking it with a friend and comparing the three levels makes a good starting point for talking about how you are alike and different.
